clients/employers
SMALL BUSINESSES
I have helped a slew of small businesses create and maintain effective brand identities as well as SEO-friendly lead-generating and e-commerce web presences. I have also supported them with content-writing and production of sales collateral, blogs, trade events, and social media outreach.
STARTUPS
My multi-disciplinary skills and bias toward action and iteration has made me a good match for startups that need to turn on a dime and make the most of the resources they have. I have worked with CEOs on brand, web, product, social-media, and investor communication engagements.
ENTERPRISE COMPANIES
I have deep experience working with enterprise line-of-business applications in an agency/ISV environment as well as, yes, in the heart of one of the world's biggest and most successful technology companies at a time when it needed to reinvent its design language and serve consumer-grade experiences to businesses.
experience
ux/ui design
My user experience work has been an amazing journey into humility, teaching me how much I can never be sure of and how to keep investigating with others so we can find design solutions that will always be, at best, a great hypothesis that can be tested and refined for ever-greater optimization.
VISUAL DESIGN & brand identity
Every brand has a mission, story, and promise—I work hard to reflect these things in all the work I do. A brand system that inspires and supports trust and loyalty should be flexible, scalable, and memorable. It should be friction-free and available to incorporate into any and all corporate properties.
customer experience
I began my career as something of a generalist, and I continue to wear that hat passionately when I can, wooing siloed teams to collaborate, making sharing between them easier, more fun, more strategic, and more effective in the effort to roll out coherent experiences that support the full spectrum of customer needs.
SHARING EDUCATION
- Led a team training to transition to an InDesign-based production workflow
- Became a valued and trusted mentor to junior designers
- Taught UX Level 1 at School of Visual Concepts
- Help with portfolio reviews and mock interviews at General Assembly
about me
A studio art graduate, I moved into design, working since then in different disciplines as technology has evolved (graphic, web, identity, UI, UX, CX) — and for five years running my own small tabletop design business. I have been honored to teach UX at Seattle's School of Visual Concepts. People call careers like mine "up through the trenches," a phrase I like because each discipline has its own challenges.
Over the last several years the discipline-specific trenches I live in keep breaking open into each other and becoming a more holistic landscape that is easier to move around in effectively in order to deliver value to clients.
I live on Bainbridge Island and work in Seattle. I love reading, walking, and finding places to have a drink and a snack with friends. I have also lived in Vermont, San Francisco, and Paris.
